Decomissioning CIs

Q:

We have a number of server’s that are to be decommissioned and removed from the Data Centre. These server’s will never be used again.
Would it be standard practice to remove the server record from the CMDB or change the system status from “In Production ” to “Decommissioned for example?

A:

I would recommend that you flag them as decommissioned but leave the records in the CMDB. There may be other records such as Problem, Incident, or Change records that reference these CIs. By deleting them, you may be removing valuable information that other processes need for planning such as Capacity or Availability. Not to mention Problem Management’s need for historical data in doing root cause investigation.
